    June 11, 2005 -- Drift Session, GROUP A Competition

6 drivers were selected for GROUP A Competition through pre-qualifying earlier in the day. Driver Shane Oliberos failed to compete due to technical difficulties. This month's competition course consisted of a straightaway leading into the Chicane, the Off-Camber series of turns and then a turn-around before the Sweeper. After the turn-around, drivers came back in the opposite direction, finishing just after the Chicane. In the video, the order of vehicles competing were: Royce Fujimoto, Barry Wong, Gene Cho, Steve Oliberos, and Shige Hirabayashi.

    Sept 10, 2005 -- Drift Session, GROUP A Competition

The Group “A” competition went seamlessly, although starting a little late, and with some serious scoring debates due to the closeness of competition. Also, the DriftSession scoring system had left Hibino struggling to make a few decisions as he had the final say and this was a bit new to him. The drivers were at the mercy of this truly knowledgeable judge who really had his work cut out for him. Barry Wong was unveiled as the ultimate winner with 82 points, but the competition was so intensely close behind him that the top five drivers were within eight points of each other and a few of them had performed flawless runs although maybe with not quite the poise and presence of Barry. Barry maintained a smooth run and a good line, although appearing a little bit soft according to our esteemed judge. Close second was scored as 78 points for the hard charging AE86 of Royce Fujimoto, who was judged as being average, but smooth. Royce was followed by a much improved, Chris Taylor, (Hibino thought his run was a little slow, but had no errors). Chris seems to have recovered nicely since a rather difficult time at the last event and scored a respectable 76.

Some pretty mean sampling right there. I also have to say that was an excellent video. I really like the competition feel and commentary. Out of all the videos I've seen recently, that last one really stands out. Good job.

Heya Shawn, thanks for the kind words. We're really trying to elevate our game...just like the awesome drifters in Hawaii. We want to showcase these guy's talents because they deserve it after all the hard work and time they put into drifting. Can't wait to get some better footage of you by the way! I'll be re-editing the previous two videos to fit the same style as the last one soon.

As a side project, we're going to start promoting Hawaii's local music scene along with Hawaii's incredible drivers, so I'll be posting our newest music vid here probably sometime this morning, so be on the lookout for that.

Is anyone having problems viewing the files? The music video is the new format, and they'll always be in that...so if I could get some responses, that'd be great. I want to make sure everyone's able to view them. It recquires WM9. Thanks.

Thanks Henrik, appreciate the feedback. The first vid is pretty amateurish, but the last "music video" is the best we have so far.

Just wanted to add that in this video, Barry Wong has those really sick Kumhos that sprew red smoke. Pretty f'ing sweet and worth a look.

                        Nov 12, 2005 -- Drift Session, GROUP A Competition

What an awesome day for drifting, photos, girls and great competition. Looking more and more like a pro event, the latest round of practice and competition exceeded any others to date. We had a few mishaps like one fortunate driver who rode up the tires and got the car on two wheels (without rolling) in the sweeper and Royce Fujimoto’s vicious impact during Group “A” reverse course practice, but the overall level of performance is very encouraging. Crowds of eager amateur photographers now swarm the sweeper, all vying for the best angle. When the Group “A” hits the track at noon it somehow reminds me of the scene at Pipeline when all the pro’s paddle out to a killer 10 foot West swell in the middle of the day. One thing we’ve noticed recently is that drifting events seem to get nicer chicks than most other motor sports events in Hawaii (I would hope you all agree). We are always excited to see the latest umbrella girls Dave Shimokawa has sniffed out and we like seeing them mingling a bit with the competitors. The latest round once again brought out a super close competition with only a single point separating 1st from 2nd the rest trailing just slightly behind and Steve Oliberos has now tied Barry Wong for the season championship lead.

This month's band is The Crud...featuring the song "Do I Need You Now". The song fit perfectly as it helped to provide a rich backdrop to the heart and soul that make Drift Session what it is...the people.

You can find "Do I Need You Now" on The Crud's debut full-length album, released June 1, 2005.

                            Dec 3, 2005 - Drift Session, Group A Competition Video 1&2

The anticipation was high as was the heat on this muggy Championship determining day. Competitors and spectators trickled in as though the previous night’s work (or partying) had taken its toll and they were too tired to get out of bed this morning. But come they did, nevertheless. It wasn’t long before they got started with the action though and by around 10:30 am most of the Group “A” drivers were there and prepping the cars for their first practice laps. A few new paintjobs, as well as cars were evident and this has become quite the norm at Drift Session events. By the end of the day a few more new cars and paint jobs would be needed to make corrections to the various bumps, and bangs (and worse) that were suffered throughout the day.

Due to the size, the video itself has been split into two separate parts for ease of downloading...the first part is the events leading up to the competition, and the second part is the competition itself. Please enjoy!

This month's band is Secondhand Sin...featuring the song "STD". The song's title actually stands for "Split-Tailed Dame" but the play on words is great and serves it well. Thanks to Secondhand Sin for attending the 1st DS Awards Banquet, and here's to their success in the future.
