D1 GRAND PRIX : ROUND ONE ON MARCH 11

    Kuala Lumpur:

Drift King of Japan (Dorikin) Keiichi Tsuchiya will perform and be chief judge at the Round One of the D1 GP (Grand Prix) Series at the Stadium Shah Alam Go-Kart Track on March 11 starting at 9 a.m.

Tsuchiya, who thrilled a huge crowd at the preview of the five-round series on Jan 21 at the Bukit Jalil Stadium car park, is credited to be the pioneer in drift car racing and popularizing the sport in Japan. He will also be chief judge for the series.

Veteran motor sports personality Kuala Lumpur-based Genji Hashimoto, who is also president of Amprex Motor Sport Sdn Bhd, the organizers of the series said a large number of local “drifters” are expected to participate in the one-day event which is open FREE to the public.

Hashimoto invited more local drifters to participate. They are to contact Amprex Motor Sport (03 9286 1499) or Ms Ginnie Ng (012 292 3955).

Trophies and awards will be awarded to winners and sponsors are invited for this year’s five GP races in Malaysia from March to October. A points system will be awarded for the top three winners who will receive trophies and awards and the top three of the series have the rights to enter D1 GP event in the US in December this year.

The total value of the awards for the series is worth about RM120, 000.

For Rd One the sponsors are Idemitsu, R3, Proton and Alla Fonte.

The next round of the series will held in Johor Bahru on April 22, Shah Alam on July 1, Penang on Aug 12 and back to Shah Alam for the grand final on Oct 28.

Hashimoto said drift racing was popular in Japan, US and Europe and he hoped to further promote the event in Malaysia, which already has a growing number of “drifters”and their fans.

He said that drift racing which originated from Japan is the art of sliding a car sideways repeatedly for as long as possible around a circuit or even a parking lot linking slides and turns into one fluid controlled movement.

Hashimoto said it was essential for local drivers to learn the skills of “drift” first to avoid unwarranted accidents.

“Once drivers are able to master the skills of drift racing, it will be an asset in their day-to-day driving, especially when facing an emergency situation on normal roads”.

Sponsors and advertisers especially those related to the motor industry are invited to participate. They can contact Ms Joanne Choi (012 207 7984 and e-mail joanne@amprex.com) or Ms Ginnie Ng (Phone: 012 292 3955 and e-mail ginnie@amprex.com) of Amprex Motor Sport Sdn Bhd.

Issued by Amprex Motor Sport Sdn. Bhd. Kuala Lumpur (Phone: 03 9286 1499)
