yo, just because andretti has never drifted before dosent mean he dosent know about driving...

he comes from a racing background...by never drifting..that makes him unbiased...i can see it as being a good thing

Hey be nice. You have to look at the new judging system to understand the selection. Judges are now responsible for only the line & style criteria of the judging process. Andretti has studied lines since the age of 15 in all types of cars around all types of tracks. Style is the most subjective criteria but someone with this much experience in a car can appreciate the style a driver throws down and it easy to spot. His score along wiht the head judge and the other associate judge are then averaged and combined with the score from the D1GP Pro 1 system to output the most accurate score possible. The great thing about the judges are that they are unbiased which enhances the credibility of the scoring process even futher. Andretti may not be known in the world of drifting but is that better than someone who is and his vote is skewed? My vote is for being fair all the way down the line. THat is what this team and system brings.

How will this new system deal with the fan favorite "ONE MORE TIME?"

Whos' going to teach Andretti what the drifting line is supposed to be? riding the wall at Irwindale isn't the 'racing line' Andretti would want to see, but that's the line the judges require. If you haven't driven the course, you don't understand the skill required to run that line.

                  This is fail

i dont think its so hard to understand a line. not all judges have drifted or have drifted great. even the drift king couldnt do much with the top secret car at irwindale.

                      Just wondering.......

                      1. What is the main advantage of the D1GP Pro 1 System if the human element is still involved in the judging process?

                      2. With regards to the head judge and associate judges. Is the head judge's score worth more than the associate judge's score? By labeling them, you create a presumption that it does.

Let's just look at this logically. Judges have a huge task judging any event. They have to simultaneously watch a run looking for a drivers line, style, angle & speed and somehow judge that. It is nearly impossible even in the best conditions where a judge can see the entire track. Factor in smoke, cars dissapearing out of view behind krails, etc. and it is absolutely 100% impossible. The end result are angry drivers, teams and fans and they are left scratching their heads wondering what just happened on the track. Is it really the judges fault or are they, just like everyone else, a victim of a flawed and impossible situation?

Now.. if you add in the natural human element of emotion and you have drivers being given a natural edge in order to please fans (for example the OMT) or because one driver is more celebrity than another or even because of friendships / alliances. The end result is nothing short of chaos.

The only answer is to do something different and the D1GP USA judging system is doing that. The D1GP Pro 1 System takes the guess work out of the equation and it accurately measures the speed, not just upon entry but throughout the course at a rate of ten times for every second the car is on the track. It also measures the same 10 times per second for lateral g loads and drift angle. This data is transmitted to the judging tower and creates a score in each category. The computerized D1GP Pro 1 provides hard facts and because of that it accounts for 75% of the overall score.

The human element is still needed to judge the line and style criteria. The line accounts for 15% of the score and style accounts for 10%. The reason why they carry less weight is because they are subjective. The scores of the three judges are then averaged

                        Example:

                        Judge #1 - score is 100
                        Judge #2 - score is 80
                        Judge #3 score is 30

The total is 210 divided by 3 for a score of 70.

So as you can see, even in this scenario whereas you have one judge (judge #3) sandbagging, the average brings that score up ad becasue this onkly accounts for 25% of the overall score with the other 75% coming accurately from the D1GP USA Pro 1, you have the most transparent, fair an accurate judging there is.

The other thing that the D1GP USA Pro 1 allows for drivers is the opportunity to look at the data after each run and in every turn. A driver and team then can implement positive setup to the competition vehicle in order to better their performance for every run. This elevates the level of competition.

The question of the difference between the head judge and associate judges was raised above, so let me explain. All three judges scores count exactly the same. The purpose for designating a head judge is to oversee the rules & regulations of the event. The head judge posesses the most experience in judging drift competitions.

The question was also asked about the fan favorite OMT. This goes back to the judging being subjective vs. objective. In an objective system such as ours, the OMT will be implemented when two drivers scores are within 1 point of another after their tandem runs. It is not subjective whereas a OMT wil be implemented to hype the crowd or to try to have one driver advance over another and potentially rob another driver of his rightful advance or victory.

This is the new D1GP USA system briefly explained. Think of the D1GP Pro 1 system as a drifting lie detector. Now we will see who is truly the best and those who are not afraid to find out will strap in and those who are will not and it is that simple. We will see who is willing to step up in Anaheim as the truth is that none of us truly know who the best is and I for one want to find out, end the controversy and take drifting to the next level.
