Snow drifting (or... cheating as i would call it)

For us idiots with low power rwd cars (chevettes, acadians, etc) or fwd cars... drifting is usually reserved for snow and ice... who else here enjoys the winter fun?

Ha! Winter drifters unite!

I used to drift FF's and FR's (mostly Lexus IS) in the snow. It's a lot of fun, and I can't help it. I'm quite a lucky guy - I live in the outskirts of the city, and I have a civilian airfield near my home (there were some 1/4 mile races a month ago). And next to the airfield's fence, there's a nice lot for training shorts slides... And it's way bigger than most parking lots. And there's no people around there, so nobody can call 911 if you practice donuts.

Winter when there is snow or rain is the perfect time to practice. Everything happens much slower. You will have time to pay attention to your steering hand work, foot work, handbrake use at a much slower speed. Even slower in the snow but we do not get snow in the San Franscisco Bay Area unfortuantely. Rain is good enough for me. In fact, I have been sliding around too much already in my stock S13 with only suspension upgrade and a VLSD. Every freeway onramp/offramp I am sideways! I better tone it down a bit before I get busted by the cops.

If getting silly in the snow qualifies as drifting, I've been at this longer than I thought. I still say the best training I ever got was having a V-8 RWD pontiac and bald tires. You learn alot by trying to avoid ditches and oncoming traffic that way. Snow drifting Rules!

drifting in the rains great because people dont hear you, so nobody calls the cops, it seems like you spin out into 180s easier though.

Yes, that's true because you have less traction. But if you spin too often, you must be doing some wrong. Finer inputs of throttle is required when traction is less.

i spun out twice yesterday, it really got my heart beating. Glad i didnt crash though, that would have sucked. My friend tried to drift behind me after school in his ford ranger, he got understeer and hit this curb and went up it to a dirt imbankment and his bumper came off. He hit the curb in some wierd way that his tire didnt pop but it debeaded from the wheel, then his had to put his spare on in the rain.

I was doing some snow drifting in the back parking lot of my school yesterday. At first all I wound up doing were 180 turnarounds and massive donuts but then I started getting the hang of keeping a "line" as it were. And today at lunch I was doing som choku-doris down a deserted street, those are so much fun.

drifting in the rain seems like it is alot like drifting in the dry, but with 500 horsepower. I think they are close stock 240 in the rain, or rb25 with 500whp in the dry. Maybe smae ease to induce the drift. No way have i drifted or even driven a 500hp car, but i think it is alike.

since my car is kinda slow but powerful, its a 1987 crown victoria, i'll be ice drifting this winter, last night in the rain it just started sliding when we went into a parking lot, pretty cool.

now that its started to rain in los angeles, i've been sliding around in my little ford 98 escort (ff) any chance I get, I also like the fact that its alot quiter when it rains, just trying to do precise 180s, thats pretty much all i can do with my car

oh and what i like doing holding the e-brake and steering, gently, just getting a feeling of how the car reacts in that manner

Yes, the ease of inducing the drift is similar between a stock 240 on wet and a 500hp car on dry. However, you are hauling so much axx with the 500hp car on dry whereas the stock 240 on wet is slow and everything is in slow motion. That is why I said it is a good time to check your steering hand work, foot work and hand brake use etc.
