Interesting switch. Is this switch a response to the new weight to tire size rule?

Could be, but I was holding out for either the Tacoma 2.7L (to screw with peoples minds even more, IE going from a V8 to a Truck 4 cylinder :P ) or going with a LOORS Pro-Lite Toyota 4 cylinder. Either way, I was hoping for the truck engine.

A little information on the 2AR-FE engine for non-Toyota-heads, via Wikipedia:

Manufacturer Toyota
Displacement 2,494 cc (152.2 cu in)
Cylinder bore 90 mm (3.543 in)
Piston stroke 98 mm (3.858 in)
Valvetrain DOHC
Compression ratio 10.4:1
Fuel system EFI
Fuel type gasoline
Power output 169–179 bhp (126–133 kW)
Torque output 167–172 lb·ft (226–233 N·m)

A 2.5 L version of the AR family, first released in the RAV4 in the U.S. and Canada in 2008. This engine also replaced the 2AZ-FE in the U.S. and Canada Camry in early 2009. The engine service weight is 324 lb that includes the oil and coolant fully filled.

Applications:

* Toyota RAV4 (ASA33/38), 181 PS (133 kW; 179 hp)@6000, 233 N·m (172 ft·lbf)@4000
* Toyota Camry ASV40 (Base & LE), 171 PS (126 kW; 169 hp)@6000, 226 N·m (167 ft·lbf)@4100
* Toyota Camry ASV40 (SE), 181 PS (133 kW; 179 hp)@6000, 232 N·m (171 ft·lbf)@4100
* Scion tC (ANT20), 180 hp (130 kW), 173 lb·ft (235 N·m)

Production

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, Inc. (TMMAL) will start building the AR 2.5L and 2.7L engines beginning in mid 2011.

Probably has more to do with the 2AR being an engine the Scion is actually optioned with. I just wish he could ditch the Scion altogether.

That's wishing money out of the teams pockets.

I wish for classes so monstrosities like what this car use to be can compete with similar builds.

i honestly think this is AWESOME!!! now i might like the car. i really liked ken gushi's and now i can accept tanners. i really wish they would put a 3sgte in there, but atleast we got a v8 out.

i now predict papadakis will probably have this car as light as a CRX when tech day comes up.

Not a smart choice unless they plan on running 205s

THIS

Most teams that are on the lighter end will be focusing on the 275 tire bracket

kinda of a shame since I loved the sound that engine made, probably the best sounding v8 out of all of them IMHO

for shame. I considered Tanner's car one of the pinnacle cars for Formula D, but rules are rules.

Recreational drifters with S chassis run 245s... I agree with slideways, the magical weight and width should be in the 275 zone.

you can go for a smaller tyre width and just dial in more mechanical grip with the suspension geometry

without knowing the rulebook inside out as it's of zero relevance to me this side of the atlantic but surely they can muck about with suspension geometry and settings?

In the FD rulebook you can't really mess with the suspensions pick up points at all really. Not enough to really help anyways. They are getting stricter with it too. So the loss in tire width is really gonna make alot of teams go back to the drawing board. But one thing atleast it will make so all the cars aren't carbon bodied ultra light weight monsters anymore and will make it so privateers will have a more level playing field.

Due to the tire rule I am betting on Sam doing really well this year as he will be pretty much the only person who will not have to change tire size this season since he is already set in his weight class with a 335 wides. He has a whole year of data to build on with those tires.
