The design of the wheel doesn't matter much, but having it at a confortable location is imperative.

Take a 2nd gen RX7 for example, the factory steering wheel design is fine, but it sits centimeters away from the dash and steering stalks. With a spacer it is in a confortable place for accurate and precise handwork.

Dished wheels have the rim closer to the driver and are an easy solution for steering wheels that are far from the driver.
