Question Nissan 240sx/red top vs. black top?

I am about to sell my 95' 300zx n/a and have been searching for a decent 240sx to make my sometimes daily driver/drift car. I live pretty close to Willow Springs Raceway and want to start in on their weekend drift days. When searching on cars for sale there are tons of 240's with motor swaps( which I'm not sure how that would effect CA emissions control, can you still pass with a swapped engine that's not to your vehicle code?) but my main question is,"which is better a blacktop or redtop engine and what are the major differences?"

This is probably a very noob question but we gotta learn to crawl before we walk.

cool..that's what a friend of mine was suggesting last night..

Not to bug you but i get a lot of different answers to this one.

"Do you know if swapping around motors will effect it being street "legal" as far as smog testing? last thing i want is to build something i can't drive outside of a track.."
