Classic Rally
Just browsing through that "post your favorite pics" post and saw that red Evo V going through a muddy puddle.
So post some nice pics/vids of some classic rally (think before 1992). Last edited by rlngtngku; 11-11-2004 at 11:13 AM. |

![]() Rover 6R4 - never did well in championships. And Lancia 037... The last rear wheel drive Lancia's rally machine. Malcolm, after the idiots from FIA cancelled the group B competitions, Toyota planned to move their 3S-GTE powered, all-wheel-drive MR2 to group S - which never really existed. Did you know? The MA70 Supra had it's episode in the World Rally Championships. It was even third in the Safari rally. Considering the fact that almost every factory team car from group B-on was all wheel drive, it's an achievement worth mentioning.

"after the idiots from FIA cancelled the group B competitions"
That's a pretty debatable statement, that class was pretty rediculous...Do you think the WRC cars aren't fast enough? |

dude a car can never be fast enouth, plus the new rules willl make them slow as *Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored*.
now we can expect crappy daewoo to compete in WRC with the new *Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored* rules for inferior crappy manufacteurs. No more turbos?? whats next fwd only rally cars!!! |

They actually had two MR2 prototypes. One with a transverse engine, and one with a longitudinal engine. The biggest problem of that era was crowd control, not cars. Sure, the cars were insane, and needed to be hauled back. That was the reasoning behind Group S. Group S would have been PERFECT. 300 bhp, with all the new technology coming out... I would love to see what they would have come out with... Here's a Group S car that Audi was working on before the class was cancelled: ![]() Here's one of Lancia's Group S prototypes.... carbon-fibre wheels... amazing car. ![]() and another... ![]() ![]() ![]() However, the FIA decided that it should all be banned, and that they should go to production rally cars (Group A). Bad idea, as Fiorio (Lancia's team boss) found every loop hole in the rule book, and dominated the series. Look at this "production" Lancia Delta Integrale:

That means that all other teams could have found these "loop holes" and exploited them...In my opinion that is superior race engineering. Maximizing your design while still conforming to the rules. It's not like he had an unfair advantage, all other teams were governed by the same rule book, no? |

true, in a sense.. however, it is going against the spirit of the regulations, which I don't like. I mean, it's cool from an engineering standpoint... but from a competitive standpoint, it was not really all that good. I am not saying Lancia did anything wrong. What they did was cool. It was the FIA's fault for leaving the rulebook open to interpretation, and thus allowing Lancia to walk all over it.
anyway, to keep the pics flowing:

That's a japanese Dirt Trial Championship car, as as you would call it in Europe - a Rallycross machine. It's a great sport, with some great over-500hp machines racing at one time on a mixed course (dirt, asphalt or concrete, sometimes sand). Now that's nice... And it's cheaper than rallying.

I thought Group B was cancelled because too many people were dieing as a result of it.

yes, the cars were too powerful, and thus had a lot of accidents. Because of poor crowd control, spectators were getting killed as well. Instead of changing the organization of the event, they shift all the responsibility to the teams, and force them to can their Group B efforts, and enter slower Group A cars. I think Group S would have been a good way to go, unless cars like that Audi I posted were entered, in which case costs would rise to silly proportions.... I dunno, maybe Group A was a good idea. haha.
