  • First Global RallyCross Event at Irwindale - March 25-26th 2011

The first Global RallyCross event is happening at Irwindale Speedway March 25-26 and there's still time to enter.

Stephan Verdier, Rhys Millen and Tanner Foust are a few of the guys competing that will be familiar to the drift community.

There's a $5,000 prize purse available in 2WD to encourage some of the grassroots competitors in the region to come out and compete. There will be a gap jump in this course, but it's for all-wheel-drive cars only. There's a bypass for 2WD competitors.

The course isn't very long and rewards strong starts, good driving and handling. The teams who competed at the fall events in NJ can chime in, but there were a few grassroots drifters there, and everybody had lots of fun.

We'll be paying out $5,000 at Irwindale (The Revolution) as follows to 2WD:

    1st Place $2500
    2nd Place $1500
    3rd Place $1000

And, the top points earner in 2WD after the first three events of the Global RallyCross Championship will earn an invitation to drive at the X Games. (The top few AWD points earners get X Games invitations, too).

Friday features head-to-head competition; Saturday is door-to-door, European Style rallycross.

TV coverage is limited for 2WD, but the event is streaming live on ESPN3 and also to Facebook. The AWD classes will get great coverage on ESPN.

The rules are the same as the rallycross events last fall; most any rally car or road race car built on a stock unibody can compete within the engine displacement and tires size limits.

RallyCar is sanctioning the events and will issue regional licenses on-site. If you have any questions on vehicle eligibility, please contact Mike Hurst at the RallyCar office +1.763.553.2742 or mikehurst@rally-america.com.

Supps and info are at www.global-rallycross.com. For more information or to sign up, please contact George Tamayo at gtamayo@global-rallycross.com.

And if you can't come out and compete, tickets are only $25 to go for both days -- young kids are free!

The first stop in the new Global RallyCross Championship, this event transforms Irwindale Speedway’s small oval track into a mixed dirt and tarmac rallycross course. Lol... see Verdier giving Tanner the chrome horn getting into the hairpin corner at 2:32... awesome!! Great run for Stephan as a privateer. He's going to be fun to watch this season.

Really wanting to build a couple of these 4WD unlimited cars and join in the fun. Not going to stop drifting in FD, but this looks like a blast. We need more teams and drivers from the USA in this sport!
