  • The C2powerhaus Info On Starions

HERES THE LOW DOWN ON MITSU STARIONS .
first just to strat things off the right way and to clear the confusion, i was knowed to be a mitsu specialist and served as a tech consultant on several starion projects and magazines, ive built several engines rating 500hp to 700hp, my other specialty is the sr20det i like building 4 cylinder engines that can spank the big boys weather drag, auto cross or street the starion is a very good strong platform to start on, the car is desing for touring sport independant suspenssion, 410 final gear w/ lsd, 2.6 ltr engine inline 4(one of the biggest 4cyl engine, td05 turbo frontmount intercool, hp rating is 185 hp@ stock 10 psi, this car is advance in its class, originaly this engine came from a truck just like the ka24, you will notice that these engines can produce alot of thorqe, on the starion block, the block is basicaly bullet proof it is very strong and can withstand upto 400 hp stock, the only draw back i found was the stock cylinder head tends to crack because of the jet valve mitsubishi implemented, that problem is old and cured, you can pick up a head for about $350 to $450 w/no jet valves, now as far as drifting i havnt yet to see a starion drift yet, how ever ive tried it and it is very well possible, all you need is to get the beast on a diet, fiber glass fender, hood etc, as some people dont know there is a steering udjustment underneath the cross member that can be adjusted to shorten the turning ratio or to get more angle for a wider drift, ok going back to the main subject, before any thing i sugest to steam clean the engine, and have it running right at stock form first, then do your upgrades after. it is more simple to trouble shoot when somthing goes wrong. there are more informantion and special mods that can be done to the starion, however it is to much to list on the board.

    compliments from

I was under the impression the starion made 220 pounds of torque at around 2500 rpms and about 170 hp at 7 1/2 psi by 5000 rpms. My friend has one of these vehicles, needless to say theyre not bad- he loves his car very much (talks about it often haha).

From what ive seen it may be a somewhat strong platform, but they have their draw backs- which is why you wont see them in drifting too often.

For starters theyre rather heavy, 2800-2900 pounds. Not the cars fault, it was designed as a "Luxury sports vehicle" so naturally, they come with a lot of comfort options. Electric this and that, etc.

The block is iron, instead of aluminum, just like the 4age- which is why the bottom ends are so strong, a nice plus- but they seem to lack else where. These cars arent known for their robust reliability (granted the engine is strong as hell, its other minor thigns that bust and make the car a hassle to drive MAS, a sensor here emssing with this or that- etc).

Their fairly rare as well even though they were made for like 7 years (not sure exactly, dont quote me)- Their after market support is small and hard to find, also making it rather expensive unless you have some good hook ups or frequent a starion club or what not.

Great cars when theyre working perfectly- i wont argue that at all. Ive seen a little of what they can do first hand- hopefully more as my friend builds his up. But Add their weight, reliability problems, lack of support, expense at fixing and finding hop-up parts, you run into problems.

Great platform, if you have the money and love for the car.

Added: Hey im wrong or something please correct me, and if ive offended you i appologize that was not my intent. Im rather un biased towrads this car neither liking nor disliking it- im just trying to hit the nail on the head from another angle, so to speak.

LOL not offended at all, the spec you have given out is the 86/87 model, the 88/89 models came with a adjustable dual waste gate actuator, set at 10psi stock hp rating @185. 86/87 can also get the same hp rating by increasing to 10psi," by the way the 88/89 models are alot better than the 86/87 models" for the other viewers out there, simply because it offers less restrictions, better ic,ignition, better fuel and ignition curves. the thing is with starion/conquests what actually gave them the bad news was the cylinder heads, like i stated earlier, that is now cured, as for the rest (reliability) nobody realy stop to think about, or realize that the car is old. 15 to 18 years old, the reason why older 70's last longer is because the cars where built simple & basic, no ecu's efi's, no fancey wires, mass air, probs, sensor etc.

drifting, people have there own likings, it would be nice to see other cars compete. now thats interesting! would'nt it? as far as the car being heavy? it is heavy!, but we have to also consider soarer, supras, skylines, 350z, mustangs, are on the heavy side as well, i think the subject falls on the drivers skills and how easy you can adapt your skills to another car, basically getting used to it

i'm exposing options for people so they dont end up following the hype, not all gloves fit every body, so if you ask me about a mitsu, a nissan, a toyota or a mazda i will put it in the most positive way, also exposing what problems thay can incounter and give advise and recomendations/ every car always has a problem a weak point/ a factory defect and there is always an answer, a cure for it.

your right about the aftermarket support, not enough, and parts being expensive, it is very compairable to toyota, i paid $85 for one valve, for my 18RG back in 1991, harmonic balancer for my 4AG back in 96 was $185 and thats with a discount.
so for you guys out there before you get into a car check if the parts are affordable or if it fits your wallet.

Starions weigh closer to 4,000 pounds. 2,800-2900 pounds can actually be a good weight for a car.

Also glad to see someone else has a Z31...Now I don't feel so alone anymore

89s are def the best- but theyre also harder to find.

My buddy has a fairly rare one himself- the 85.5 flatty if u know what it is, hes actually got the very first off the assembly line- the whatever paper they got has the production number 00000001 or whatever (he wears that thign like a badge of honor haha)

And yes ill agree theyre very interesting cars, hes into drift so when he gets better well see how the car does. He recently showed me 3 vieos of soem guy at a competition in one, only videos i had seen of them drifting and not racing. wasnt too great but not bad- the guy kept spinning out though. Id place my money on turbo lag as the cause with combo of the weight. YOu could hear it spool up real fast then the tires would scream, then hed spin out.

i missed that post some how.. 4000 pounds

                        got any references?

a 4000 pound car on a turbocharged I4 making 170-180hpish wouldnt pull 16s stock in the 1/4 mile it seems to me..

Hmmm thats good information. Starions are very beautiful cars with great styling points. What about the Daytona?

LJ Garcia's first civic Widebody kit was based upon a starion's body style. Also, the first Fast and Furious was also based upon a race between a starion and some other car, thats how the screenplay artists i came up with the movie i guess. Just a little "on the side" info

Yes, close to 4,000 pounds...and I know this for a fact since I've read the Manufacturer label on the car.

It's a couple hundred pounds heavier than my Z, which is at the 3,600 pound range. reason why its getting 16's is because of the turbo...no turbo and the car wouldn't be getting any significant times.
