Newbie wants to know how a clutch works (yes beleive it)

As youse all know I'm a Newbie, really Newb but I'm trying to learn so that's why I'd like to know how a clutch works. I know it needs to be pressed in order to shift gears because it releases the clutch plate (or sumthin) but I'd like to know more details such as why you "pop" the clutch at 6000rpm (I beleive it was in a Grip video and the Japanese D1 driver said that when he went to Hawaii in the Drifter X 180).
